The Full History
In 1948, Robert D. Bonanno began Goodyear Motors, initially a car repair business, in a two-car garage heated by an antique stove. The family name Bonanno (meaning “Goodyear” in Italian) was the origin of the business name.
Repairing cars eventually led to buying, reconditioning and selling pre-owned cars and small trucks for a demanding marketplace. Bonanno then converted a horse stable into a workable garage and repair station while also displaying inventory along the busy Route 46 East highway. At the time, Goodyear Motors had one salesman and one mechanic.
By 1955, Bonanno had purchased a larger piece of property and expanded the business to a 5,000 square foot building with offices, showrooms, and space to store larger trucks. For a short period, Goodyear Motors sold Studebaker cars and Suzuki motorcycles in addition to pre-owned cars and trucks. The demand for more trucks in a rapidly growing marketplace led the company to concentrate solely on used trucks and truck bodies, parts, repairs and related equipment.
By 1970, the company sold used trucks and truck bodies exclusively. In 2000, the company expanded again to include an additional 3,000 square feet of office and service area space.
Today, Goodyear Motors is managed by Robert J., Michael, and Nicholas Bonanno, and is supported by fifteen employees. The company operates on approximately 2.5 acres of building and display area property, and has an average inventory of about 100-150 used truck and truck bodies in Lodi, NJ. Also included in the inventory are truck lift gates, refrigeration units, Ampliroll Hook Lifts, and Switch-N-Go™ by Bucks Fabricating. The company’s ads can be seen in the most popular trade magazines.
